A few days ago there was a report of a baby Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), one of the three species which nest in Vieques. Erick Bermúdez, a FWS biologist authorized to handle the endangered species retrieved the newborn, which was released into the wild that same night.
Remember if you find a sea turtle, leave it alone. They know what they are doing! If the turtle is in distress you may call the Vieques Sea Turtle Emergency Hotline: 787-428-8288
It was a group effort to recover the baby sea turtle. Thank you, Yashei Rosario, for notifying the Sea Turtle Conservation Project Supervisor. Thanks also to the other Vieques NWR employees who participated in releasing the turtle back into the wild.
